Tell us about a GRITTY MOMENT in your life that has forced you to learn what you are truly made of…
At a young age, I had to learn how to navigate life without parents.
GUTS: How did you “grow guts” and be brave enough to get through your “gritty moment”? Were you afraid? Where did you find your courage? How did facing that moment affect your confidence? Did you feel more confident afterward?
It was hard and it still is hard. I remembered that everyone has something hard that they are dealing with and was able to feel less alone. I found courage in talking to others about their struggles, and I started to realized just how strong I was, how strong we all are.
RESILIENCE: What did you learn from pushing through your “gritty moment”? What helped you “not give up” and persevere?
I learned that I know what love is because of my mother. All of her love, wisdom, and joy helps me find strength every day, to not give up.
IMPERFECTION: How do you deal with failure and making mistakes? Did your “gritty moment” force you to learn and grow?
I made a lot of mistakes. I felt very lost and unable to truly take care of myself. I did the best I could at the time. I learned a lot and am ultimately proud of myself for finding a way through, for still working my way through.
TEAM: What role did your support system play in helping you through this challenging time? What role has this “team” had in your life?
Strangers that opened up to me about their hard times showed me how strong people truly are. We each carry so much and I am grateful for everyone who has been open and honest about their struggles. Specifically, meeting others who are also young and parentless has been profound
How has playing sports and/or participating in athletics positively affected your life?
Running is my best and oldest friend, it has always been there for me. When times get hard, I go out into the woods and let my feet pound the dirt while my mind sorts it all out.
And just for fun… What advice would you give to your younger “GRITTY GIRL” self?
I would tell younger Allison to remember that you have the power to create a beautiful life for yourself, no matter what.

“Thank you Allison for sharing your GRIT And for being one of our featured speakers at our upcoming “GET GRITTY cleveland 2020 event!
