MEET Abigail                      

 Hi! I’m Abigail. I’m a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist based in Cleveland. I believe there’s nothing that impacts your health more than the food you eat. I LOVE food and I love showing people how to make healthy and delicious food a part of their lifestyle.

 Tell us about a GRITTY MOMENT in your life that has forced you to learn what you are truly made of…

I’ve definitely had gritty moments at every stage in my life, but the most recent one was when I decided to go back to school to become a dietitian and get my master’s degree in nutrition. I was living in NYC and had a great job in financial recruiting. I was 24 and while I loved my job, I knew that my heart was with nutrition. It was scary to go back to school, take a serious pay cut, and still be working part-time but I knew it was my passion and I would regret not going for it. So I applied to NYU and the rest is history!

GUTS: How did you “grow guts” and be brave enough to get through your “gritty moment”? Were you afraid? Where did you find your courage? How did facing that moment affect your confidence? Did you feel more confident afterward?
I was terrified for so many reasons. First, I loved my job, team and boss and was scared to tell them that I wanted to switch careers, and second, I was scared to make a big career move and go back to school for another 4 years. Deep down I knew I would regret it if I didn’t make the change. I was so lucky to have an amazing support system in friends, family, my fiance (then boyfriend) and colleagues. Once I ripped the band-aid, I had such confidence in my decision and was so excited to start the journey.
 RESILIENCE: What did you learn from pushing through your “gritty moment”? What helped you “not give up” and persevere?

I learned that hard work and chasing your passion is always worth it and surrounding yourself with smart, inspiring and supportive people is the best thing you can do for yourself.

 IMPERFECTION: How do you deal with failure and making mistakes? Did your “gritty moment” force you to learn and grow?
TEAM: What role did your support system play in helping you through this challenging time? What role has this “team” had in your life?
How has playing sports and/or participating in athletics positively affected your life?
I honestly believe that sports and athletics have been the most defining part of my life. Sports were always part of my story – I rode horses growing up, played field hockey and lacrosse in high school, and then played field hockey in college at a Division 1 program. The discipline, resilience, and friendships that I made have paved the way for everything I’ve done in my life and truly made me who I am. The discipline and organization that is required of student-athletes teaches you skills for life.
And just for fun… What advice would you give to your younger “GRITTY GIRL” self?
Smile, laugh, move and enjoy every day. Don’t take anything for granted, work hard, read a lot, never stop learning, surround yourself with inspiring people, and chase your passions.
